How to Keep Your Home Safe While You’re Away on Vacation

Your home is your sanctuary. It’s a safe space for you and your family and most likely your home contains your most priced possessions. However, sometimes you need to leave your home for at least a little while to explore new places and make amazing memories. With a few necessary precautions you can comfortably take a vacation with the peace of mind that comes with knowing your home is secure. Here are a few tips to consider to ensure the safety of your home while you’re away.

The Five Best Tips for Keeping Your Home Secure in Your Absence

If you have a beautiful new build home from Acadia Home Builders in Legacy Farms, Wolverine Country Club Estates, Black Hills Estates or any of the thriving communities in Southeast Michigan, keep it safe from break-ins with these important tips.

1 – Invest in a professionally monitored home security system.

This is a great investment for families that take frequent trips because it allows for constant surveillance of your home. Just make sure to work with a reputable company and display your “monitored by _______” sign – sometimes the sign alone is enough to deter would-be thieves.

2 – Resist the urge to talk about your vacation on social media.

Naturally you want to post pictures on Facebook and Instagram, and you can after you get back. It’s never a good idea to advertise your absence because you never know who might pick up on this information.

3 – Put your lights on timers.

If you don’t have a “smart” lighting system that you can control from your phone, at least put your interior and exterior lights on timers so you can make it seem like someone is home. Thieves almost always target vacant homes so it makes sense to make yours seem occupied while you’re away.

4 – Get someone to check your mail and mow your lawn.

Nothing says “I’m away on vacation” like an overflowing mailbox or an unmown lawn. So get a friend, neighbor or family member to pick up your mail and hire a lawn service to take care of your grass. This will also allow other people to periodically check up on your home just to make sure that everything is okay.

5 – Don’t leave spare keys lying around.

You may think that your keys are well hidden but thieves will likely look EVERYWHERE. So even if you normally leave a key under a rock or behind a potted plant, remove this key and put it somewhere safe while you’re on your trip.
